Ok, I’ll just admit it… there’s moments where, after “times up” is called and the pencil is put down, I look at what’s happened and say, “that’s not just a crummy drawing, but it’s kind of creepy too.” This is one of those moments.
It’s the combination of the pose, the dirtiness of the charcoal itself, and the open bind of the book that add to the shortcomings. I’m finding some good stuff in the result. I like the play of the lines as the butt up to the powdered charcoal in the lower third of the image, but it’s not going to stop anyone from turning the page.
